About Us

Welcome to the Dakota Buttes Visitors Council’s Buffalo Trails Tour and our Buffalo Trails and Buffalo Heartbeats books. We are a volunteer committee of Hettinger, North Dakota, and as one of our programs have focused on research and education about the unique buffalo history of our area. In 1995, we published a small book The Last Great Buffalo Hunts: Traditional Hunts in 1880 to 1883 by Teton Lakota People. We developed the Historic Site along US Highway 12, honoring one of the last great hunts and an ancient buffalo hunting campground used for centuries by many tribes at that site. We gave historic tours of the Last Great Buffalo Hunts, Tepee rings, the Buffalo Butchering Site and the campground of the General George Custer and his 7th Cavalry. Among many other projects for our community we have sponsored Black Powder Shoots and Buckskinner Rendezvous, erected Yellowstone Trail US Hwy 12 signs through the ND section of our state, placed billboards and banners and helped to fund numerous events and celebrations.
